His contributions have significantly advanced the understanding and treatment of melanoma, transforming it into a largely curable disease. In 2023, Professor Scolyer faced a personal health crisis with a diagnosis of glioblastoma. Leveraging his extensive research experience, he opted for experimental treatments, aiming to pioneer new approaches in brain cancer therapy. His journey has been widely covered, including features on ABC News and recognition as the 2024 Australian of the Year alongside Professor Georgina Long
